Day 31/32 - (1109) Yongary: Monster from the Deep + (1006) Boggy Creek II: and the Legend Continues11/1/2020 (1109) - Yongary: Monster from the Deep
10:12 PM You probably noticed that I haven't watched any MST3K yet tonight. That's because I'm actually planning on watching it past midnight. I figured for Halloween, watching the show super late at night would only be fitting. I also might be watching three episodes tonight. 10:19 PM I obviously won't have time for three episodes in the next two hours. But I think I'll have just enough time for a season 11 episode, since season 11 episodes are about ten minutes shorter than a normal episode. I'll be watching episode 1109 - Yongary! 10:31 PM And I think I'll start watching right now. So, here we go! 10:33 PM So already, the show is EXTREMELY different from how the show was before. We have a brand new cast, a new set, a cold open before every episode, a new theme song, new mads, and a lot of other new things. 10:34 PM Seasons 11 and 12 were home to a lot of experimentation. Some of it was good, and some of it was bad. However, I think season 11 was overall more successful. The invention exchange is also back, and the tiny desk to flip over in rage is pretty clever. 10:36 PM Hitler Coffee is pretty clever too, giving a Hitler mustache to anyone who drinks it. 10:37 PM Now, as for the new mads, I think Patton Oswalt does a great job of playing Max here. He already kinda looks like Frank, but he does match the kinda awkward behavior that the original Frank had very well. However, I'm a not super big fan of Kinga. 10:38 PM I like her fine enough and she has some funny moments, but she's not really as goofy as the original Dr. Forrester or Pearl. 10:39 PM "You know how children are, right?" "Missing?" 10:42 PM Oh yeah, Gypsy appears in the theatre now too! She only appears for a couple riffs per episode, but what she says is usually humorous enough. However, Gypsy's riff was kinda bad here, even to the point where Jonah was unimpressed by it. 10:43 PM The theatre seats are also much smaller now to make up for the new widescreen format. There's now ten theatre seats on the screen and the movie is much more visible. 10:46 PM We also got these new musical bumpers, where Max talks a bit about the movie or certain elements of the show. I really like 'em! 10:49 PM One problem with the new show is that a lot of times, the riffs feel like their coming too fast at you. This might also be because the riffs were all spliced together from each voice actor. Yeah, they didn't record the riffs with all three actors in the same room. 10:50 PM I mean, a lot of the jokes are still pretty dang funny. I'm having a good time with this episode so far. It's just a bit too fast paced for my liking. 10:53 PM They also really like to repeat that capsule riff. Calm down with the capsules, please lol. 10:55 PM That depressed and stupid sounding voice that Crow and Servo do is really funny lol. 10:58 PM And now we're talking about astronauts and their music tastes. Surprised that Pink Floyd wasn't brought up, since a lot of their music could be classified as space rock. 10:59 PM As for the movie here, this is kind of like a Gamera movie except made in South Korea. There's a bunch of scientists and reporters, an annoying/asshole kid, and we'll eventually get to see a giant monster of course. 11:01 PM And Servo's going boingy boing. Yeah, that's a new thing Servo can do, which is fly around the screen. It's often not very funny at all, as are most visual jokes in MST3K. I don't like a show like this really needs weird visual gags like that. 11:02 PM "Looks like your weird uncle's train set." LOL 11:06 PM This movie sure loves that weird magic sound effect. 11:10 PM Waking up to the George Lopez intro at 3 AM 11:13 PM So, I guess they're all trying to make the best of their last moments before Yongary shows up. But Yongary is just destroying a model town. He's not posing any threat to them. 11:17 PM And now we have a Yongary themed night club, which I gotta say is pretty creative. 11:19 PM Oh yeah, that bubble transition. Those are used to cover up edits in the footage. In the old series, most host segments were done in one take. Now they're done in multiple takes, and the bubbles cover up the fact that they're done that way. It's kinda distracting. 11:20 PM And Yongary has a FLAMETHROWER in his mouth?! That's actually pretty based. 11:31 PM That kid is shitfaced, literally. 11:32 PM Aw man, now I kinda want Boo Berry. 11:33 PM And now we're on the final movie segment. Wait, already? These episodes do go by kinda fast. 11:33 PM I think the host segments are somewhat to blame for that. A lot of them are so short in these new segments. 11:35 PM Every time you should a missile at me, you're compensating for something. I'd read that book. 11:38 PM I always did want to drink the weird scientific liquids that you often seen in these kinda movies. Probably because they just look like Kool-Aid lol. 11:41 PM And now Yongary is dancing... I don't even know what to say. 11:42 PM One little nice touch is that the music in the bumpers are usually remixes of classic songs from the original MST3K series. It really is a great way of honoring these iconic songs, and the remixes sound pretty damn good. 11:44 PM This movie is actually the prequel to Phase IV. 11:48 PM That's kind of a disturbing death scene, honestly. 11:49 PM BABABOOEY 11:51 PM Yongary burgers 11:52 PM And they just had to get one more capsule riff in. 11:53 PM I completely forgot there was a song in this episode. 11:55 PM Nice enough song, I guess. Nowhere near as good as Concepts or Every Country Has a Monster, but really how could you top those songs? 11:56 PM And now we have one of my favorite parts of the new show, the end credits. More specifically, the end credits music. It is an absolutely beautiful orchestral remix of the original credits theme, Mighty Science Theater. And my god I love it. 11:57 PM It easily overshadows the original credits theme, and it honestly brings a tear to my eye when I listen to it sometimes. It's wonderful. Oh yeah, I guess I gotta talk about the episode now. 11:59 PM Overall, I think it's quite a successful episode for the new season. While I wasn't always laughing, I was at least always entertained by it. I think I just gravitate towards the goofy monster movies more than any other genre. 12:00 AM However, I do think Avalanche is still my favorite episode from the new seasons. The laughs are just much more steady in that episode. But even with that, Yongary is definitely no slouch. 12:05 AM Now, for the next episode or two (I might just do one more episode, I don't know), I'm probably gonna wait until after the daylight savings shit ends. Which this really belongs in its own tweet, but I must say it. Daylight savings sucks and is a waste of time. 12:09 AM But anyway, I have a set of 24 episodes that I've never seen before. And for the next episode(s), I'll be randomly picking from the set of 24. So, I actually have no idea what I'm gonna watch next. But I'll be finding that out shortly. So, let's see what I get. 12:14 AM And the episode chosen is 1006 - Boggy Creek II! So, I guess we're not quite done with season 10 just yet. Well, I actually was kinda interested in watching this episode, since I think it's a movie about bigfoot and that sounds like it has to be good. 12:15 AM So, I'll be watching that one later tonight. And I don't care if it's November 1st now. It's still basically Halloween. ONE END OF DAYLIGHT SAVINGS LATER (1006) - Boggy Creek II: and the Legend Continues 1:19 AM Alright, well it's now 1 AM... AGAIN. Seriously, daylight savings is so stupid. Anyway, I'm about to begin Boggy Creek II. And yeah, it's November, but fuck it we're having a 2nd Halloween tonight. Anyway, let's begin. 1:22 AM Aw man, I remember when I was in Cub Scouts in elementary school. That's definitely a part of my life that I'm glad I've moved past. 1:25 AM Oh, Pearl. I would feel bad for you, but your schemes are always so ridiculous that I'm shocked you think they would ever work. 1:26 AM Oh hey, and we have a daylight savings time riff. Fitting! 1:30 AM I'm positive that I've mentioned this before, but I do have a bit of a love for cryptids and weird creatures. So, I think this movie is gonna really hit the spot for me. 1:31 AM Also, it seems like the composer was going for a minimalist approach. 1:32 AM So, why are we watching this random football game? I wanna see the monster, damnit! 1:41 AM It's a giant hairy meatball man. 1:44 AM Mike couldn't see his flashback because he needed contacts. Pretty clever. 1:47 AM This can't be camping if there's no s'mores. 1:49 AM I'm embarrassed to admit that I have the same problem that guy with the red shirt has. I really should try to lose some weight so that my chest doesn't stick out so much. It's kinda difficult in the winter, but I'll find a way. 1:52 AM This guy is trying to figure out how to use his brand new Commodore 64. 1:57 AM Eh, Missile Command's not that great of a game. I'm not too upset about that one getting deleted. 1:58 AM I just got a few more spaces to clear in Minesweeper. 2:02 AM I'd like to buy a little plastic figurine of Bobo- um, sorry. I meant to say the creature. 2:04 AM It's cute when they reference the universe of the show in the theatre. 2:06 AM "And now something for the ladies" Jesus, that got a good laugh out of me. 2:06 AM For context, they're watching a guy running to take a shit. 2:07 AM This further proves my point that old people are always funny. 2:12 AM So wait, is this still the story? Where's the more serious part of the story? Was that the one where the guy got attacked from the window? If so, then why was it weirdly split into two parts? 2:15 AM And Servo wants to see these girls wrestle really bad for some reason. I'll be honest. I never understood the wrestling fetish. 2:19 AM Okay, Servo's reconsidering. Thank goodness. 2:20 AM Also man, this movie sure loves weird synth sounds. 2:31 AM "Marvelous breasts" 2:33 AM Naturally occurring cheese 🤢 2:39 AM I saw the little creature. This line shouldn't be said by any character above the age of 9. 2:41 AM So, does this big fat guy want to kill the creature? Is that the conflict here? 2:43 AM Boggy Arnold Creature 2:44 AM So, I guess there were two creatures. I don't think that was made clear before. And they just wanted to be reunited. It's just Gorgo again. 2:47 AM Wait, Capri Sun is in the special thanks credits? Oh my goodness. 2:50 AM Well, at least Pearl got what she deserved... only for her to eventually hurt Bobo again. Man, if Mr. Enter saw this show, he would definitely think it was too mean spirited. 2:52 AM But anyway, that was Boggy Creek II. And much like Squirm, this is a difficult one for me to rank. It's a good episode with a couple big laughs, but it's also dry at times. The movie is pretty consistently entertaining though. 2:53 AM I do kinda have a love for movies where it's just some people having a big old adventure in the woods. This episode kinda reminds me of Final Sacrifice in that regard. I don't know why, but these movies just have an adventurous tone to them that I really dig. 2:55 AM Host segments were a bit on the forgettable side, but I did find the opener where Bobo ruined Pearl's plan by making a potato smoothie to be quite funny. So, we got a nice cheesy movie and some decent riffing, with a few great jokes peppered throughout. 2:56 AM Does that make this episode great or just good? I think I'm gonna lean more towards the positive here and go with great. This episode does have some boring parts, but so do a lot of my other favorite episodes. And the big laughs here are well worth watching for. 2:57 AM So yeah, I'd say check this one out. This is definitely my favorite season 10 episode so far. Will anything else top this one? We'll see. 3:00 AM Anyway, I think I'm calling this marathon done. Yes, the MST3K Halloween marathon has come to a close. Overall, I would say it was a pretty good experience. This really was just a way to motivate me to see more episodes that I haven't seen before. 3:01 AM But hey, it ended up working and I got to see 25 episodes that were completely new to me. Of all the episodes I watched, Beginning of the End was definitely my favorite. Ridiculously cheesy movie, plenty of great laughs, some solid host segments, it's damn near perfect. 3:03 AM However, I would also say that Bride of the Monster, The Atomic Brain, and The Brute Man were really good as well. And this marathon helped me remember just how great of an episode Screaming Skull is. 3:05 AM One thing I'll probably do differently is maybe not do 31+ episodes. Having to do an episode each day did get to be a bit much, especially with school work getting in the way. I wasn't in the mood for an MST3K everyday. So, that definitely could have impacted my ratings. 3:06 AM And I think after watching so much in one month at such a rapid pace, I'm a little bit burned out. So, if I ever do another one of these, maybe I could try doing an episode every other day. Or maybe three episodes a week? I don't know. But definitely not daily. 3:07 AM There were two days where I just couldn't bring myself to watch an episode. And when that happens, that probably means I'm watching too much. But even with that, this was still a pretty damn good marathon. Lots of solid episodes here. 3:09 AM The worst episode was definitely Track of the Moon Beast. That one was not fun at all. And there were some other weak ones like Bloodlust, Deadly Mantis, It Conquered the World. But besides that, it was mostly solid. 3:10 AM Anyway, that's all I got. I'm probably gonna go off Twitter again for a while now, since Twitter is an absolute cesspool. But I will say that I had a great Halloween. I didn't trick or treat or have a big old party. 3:12 AM But I did eat a bunch of candy and mozzarella sticks, watched MST3K, and listened to Meddle by Pink Floyd. And if that's not a good day, then I don't know what is. Happy Halloween everyone. I'm gonna start preparing for Turkey Day now.
